In 1887, the Keller family sought help from the Perkins Institution for the Blind, which recommended a young teacher named Anne Sullivan. Anne herself had faced significant challenges, having been partially blind and endured a difficult childhood. Her experiences instilled in her a deep empathy and a passionate resolve to help others.

Seeding Sustainability: Nurturing Environmental Consciousness in Children

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. As the sun rises on this special day, let's embark on a journey of environmental enlightenment with our children. Today is not just any day; it's an opportunity to plant the seeds of sustainability in the fertile minds of our youngest generation. Together, let's sow the seeds of change that will blossom into a greener, more conscious tomorrow.

Gather your little ones around and embark on an adventure of discovery. As consumers, we interact with the world through the goods we use every day. From the moment we wake until we rest our heads at night, we are surrounded by a world of packaging.

Take a moment to observe the items in your home. What do you see? Boxes, bags, bottles—all wrapped in layers of plastic and paper, designed to protect and preserve. But as we unwrap these treasures, do we consider the impact of our choices on the Earth?

At Little Builders we can not stress the idea of play based learning enough. Make this a meaningful and enjoyable conversation they will remember forever by adding various games, and or activities. Here are a some great ideas they will never forget.

For the Cause:

1. Plastic Bottle Planters:
   • Gather plastic bottles and cut them in half.
   • Let the children decorate the bottles with paint, stickers, or markers.
   • Fill the bottom half with soil and plant seeds or small plants.
   • Discuss how reusing the bottles as planters reduces waste and benefits the environment.
2. Recycled Sculptures:
   • Collect various plastic items like bottles, caps, and containers.
   • Provide glue, tape, and other adhesives.
   • Let children use their imagination to create sculptures or artworks from the recycled materials.
   • Encourage them to explain their creations and how reusing plastics can reduce waste.
3. Plastic Sorting Game:
   • Prepare a variety of plastic items (bottles, bags, containers) of different colors, shapes, and sizes.
   • Create bins labeled "Reuse," "Recycle," and "Trash."
   • Have children sort the plastics into the appropriate bins while explaining why each item belongs there.
   • Discuss the importance of proper waste management and how it helps reduce pollution.
4. Upcycled Fashion Show:
   • Gather old or unwanted plastic items such as bags, bottles, and packaging.
   • Provide scissors, tape, and other craft supplies.

For the fun:

2. Trash Sorting Game: Prepare a variety of items (paper, plastic, glass, etc.) and have the children sort them into bins labeled "Recycle," "Reuse," and "Trash." Use this as an opportunity to discuss why certain items can be reused or recycled.
3. DIY Crafts from Recycled Materials: Set up a crafting station with recycled materials such as empty egg cartons, cardboard tubes, and scrap paper. Guide the children in making crafts like bird feeders, puppets, or decorations for the classroom using these materials.
4. Storytime with Eco-Books: Read age-appropriate books that emphasize the importance of reusing, reducing, and recycling. Afterward, facilitate a discussion about the lessons learned from the stories and how they can be applied in everyday life.
